Ideal pH Range for Cherries
Sweet cherries perform best in well-drained soils with a slightly acidic to neutral pH, roughly 6.0–7.0. Outside this range, key nutrients like iron and zinc become less available and fruit quality can suffer.

Watch These Numbers
- Soil pH in root zone: aim for 6.0–7.0
- Bicarbonates in irrigation water: keep at or below ~120 ppm
- Test soil and water at least once per season
Common Warning Signs
- Yellowing between leaf veins
- Weak new shoots or poor vigor
- Fruit size or firmness slipping over time
The 120 ppm Rule
When irrigation water bicarbonates are above ~120 ppm, it acts like a slow liming program. Over time, soil pH creeps up and cherries drift out of their ideal range.
• Test irrigation water yearly • Compare to the 120 ppm guideline • If you're over, discuss inline acidification with your advisor
